Disney are having quite the week. After purchasing the George Lucas owned LucasFilm for a whopping $4 billion and change, the company can now claim the weekend’s number one movie in the US with the gaming animated fare WRECK-IT-RALPH. The film managed to pot a huge $50 million over the three days despite some theatres still being closed on the Eastern seaboard, all due to the aftermatch of Hurricane Sandy.
The film revolves around a video game world where a villain sets out his dream to become a hero in his arcade environment. It features the voices of John C. Reilly, Sarah Silverman and Jane Lynch, but more importantly marks the big-screen debuts of video game characters like Sonic The Hedgehog and Yoshi, along with M. Bison and Ryu from the Streetfighter games and many, many more.
‘Ralph,’ which knocked last week’s number one off the top spot, the Ben Affleck directed ARGO, took nearly twice as much as the number two movie on the list, the Denzel Washington starrer FLIGHT, but it did open in twice as many theatres across the US and Canada.
ARGO managed the number three spot, but continues to do well with yet another $10 million in the bank ahead of its UK release this coming week. At four is the much anticipated THE MAN WITH THE IRON FISTS, written by and directed by Wu-Tang Clan rapper turned filmmaker RZA, which only managed $8.2 million, which may be seen as a disappointment for the bloody martial arts fare.
Rounding out the top five is TAKEN 2, which we’ll say no more about, but it is indeed a massive global hit which added another $6 million to a huge $125.6 million haul.
Here’s the rest. Expect the 23rd Bond movie SKYFALL to upset the Disney dream when it opens across North America from Friday.
