Morgan Spurlock is attached to direct a One Direction 3D Concert film/documentary for Sony Pictures. The film is looking to be released on 30th August 2013 through Tristar Pictures. Spurlock will be known to most as the guy who ate McDonald’s everyday for 30 days and made himself very sick in SUPER SIZE ME, and he’s also had a couple of other films worthy of your attention such as THE GREATEST MOVIE EVER SOLD, and COMIC-CON EPISODE IV: A FAN’S HOPE.
He seems like an odd choice to direct such a film considering he is usually challenging viewers in some way such as pointing out flagrant consumerism or disregard of health. He may not be the subtlest of film makers, but his films are great gateways into the world of documentaries. However, Spurlock himself sounds very excited by the prospect:
This is an incredible opportunity and an amazing moment in time for the band. To capture this journey and share it with audiences around the world will be an epic undertaking that I am proud to be a part of.
If this was more of a look at manufactured pop stars then I could understand Spurlock’s involvement, but he is co-producing along with Ben Winston, Adam Milano, and the bands manager, Simon Cowell. Cowell also had some words to say about his phenomenally successful boyband and Spurlock taking the helm:
I’m delighted we’re making this film and Morgan is the perfect person to give that access-all-areas, behind-the-scenes look into what it’s like to be One Direction today. What the band have achieved is incredible, they and their fans have made history around the world – this is for them.
I guess it’s easy to hate on One Direction, and they can be exceptionally annoying; especially when I see their faces sculpted in plastic gawping at me when I’m shopping for cereal. Why put them there Tescos? But they have managed to be very successful, becoming the first UK act ever to hit the number one spot in the US with their debut album. I can’t say I’ve sat down and listened to their music but one of their latest songs on their second album was described in an advertisement as “breathtaking”. Since I equate “breathtaking” with being kicked in the nuts or having my head held under water, that doesn’t sound like a good thing.
