The struggle to make a reboot of THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN justifiable, fresh and thrilling all at the same time, was always going to be a tall order so soon after Sam Raimi’s blockbusting trio. Still, while it may not have been as eye-opening or jaw-dropping as seeing the web-spinning superhero for the first time (all those years ago), I think it’s safe to say cast and crew just about pulled it off. With the tricky retread of Peter Parker’s origin story out of the way, as well as the rather lame introduction of the first villain, we’re all eager to see Andrew Garfield back as our friendly neighbourhood SPIDER-MAN.
Shailene Woodley is now confirmed as Mary-Jane Watson for the sequel, although she’s not expected to feature strongly until the concluding three-quel with the expected exit of Emma Stone’s doomed Gwen Stacey in this follow-up. Eyes now turn to casting for the villains and the recent rumours of Jamie Foxx as Electro are gaining strength by the day with the studio still not confirming nor denying, suggest negotiations are ongoing.
The character of friend (turned foe) Harry Osborne, to our wall-crawlers alter-ego will also make his first appearance in Marc Webb’s sequel. The role is currently being fought between a trio of rising young actors. Dane DeHaan, so good in found-footage thriller CHRONICLE and John Hilcoat’s LAWLESS is in the frame, as is FUNNY GAMES’ Brady Corbet and BEAUTIFUL CREATURES heartthrob Alden Ehrenreich. Expect an announcement in a matter of weeks or even days with confirmation the film is now in pre-production for a shooting date set for February 2013.

Thanks for the news, Craig, although it doesn’t really matter. As big of a role as Harry plays in Peter’s life, I hope they gloss over him in favor of new territory. I missed the first movie when it was in theaters, but I did get a chance to watch it Friday night. I was in my office at DISH surfing online, when I saw that The Amazing Spider-Man was available to rent to my DISH Hopper DVR. I ordered it and it was ready to watch by the time I got home. It was better than the other three films, but I think we already had a grasp on Peter’s origin. Casting Harry Osbourne would indicate more back tracking, and I don’t look forward to that. I really hope that Marvel gets the Spiderman film rights back, because Sony doesn’t know what they are doing.
