For any fans of the Franco-Belgian comics, THE SMURFS was a gigantic kick in the teeth. It took our lovable little blue friends from their magical land and shoved them into New York. Filled with pop culture references and awful performances, THE SMURFS aimed itself at the lowest common denominator. It could have easily been a moving and charming film that reached levels of Pixar or Studio Ghibli sophistication. But why bother with that when Sony can aim for as much money as they can.
Well here’s the first look at a teaser trailer for a second outing. Who knows, maybe they will put everything right but judging on the ‘comedy’ in this trailer I sincerely doubt it. The full synopsis mentions that THE SMURFS are going to Paris…of course they are.
In this sequel to the hybrid live action/animated family blockbuster comedy The Smurfs, the evil wizard Gargamel creates a couple of mischievous Smurf-like creatures called the Naughties that he hopes will let him harness the all-powerful, magical Smurf-essence. But when he discovers that only a real Smurf can give him what he wants — and only a secret spell that Smurfette knows can turn the Naughties into real Smurfs — Gargamel kidnaps Smurfette and brings her to Paris, where he has been winning the adoration of millions as the world’s greatest sorcerer. It’s up to Papa, Clumsy, Grouchy, and Vanity to return to our world, reunite with their human friends Patrick and Grace Winslow, and rescue her! Will Smurfette, who has always felt different from the other Smurfs, find a new connection with the Naughties Vexy and Hackus – or will the Smurfs convince her that their love for her is True Blue?
THE SMURFS 2 is released 31st July 2013. It stars Neil Patrick Harris, Hank Azaria, Katy Perry, Alan Cumming, Anton Yelchin, Jonathan Winters, and Jayma Mays.
