One minute you have one of the biggest franchises ever under your belt, the next, a big cartoon mouse comes and strips it all away. Back in August, 20th Century Fox changed their plans to release one STAR WARS film a year in 3D, and with the latest news of Disney’s acquisition, it was probably because they didn’t want their films going up against the new trilogy. STAR WARS EPISODE II: ATTACK OF THE CLONES and STAR WARS EPISODE III: REVENGE OF THE SITH are now scheduled, in their 3D forms, for 20th September and 4th October 2013 respectively.
STAR WARS EPISODE I: THE PHANTOM MENACE was released early in 2012 and grossed $102.7 million worldwide. Not bad for a film some people would have you believe is the worst thing since genocide. ATTACK OF THE CLONES will be facing off against Ron Howard’s Formula 1 film RUSH and ought to be wary of Disney’s THE LITTLE MERMAID 3D opening a week earlier. REVENGE OF THE SITH will go up against Vince Vaughan comedy THE DELIVERY MAN, PARANOIA, and SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR.
I’m quite a sucker for the prequel trilogy, and I was there opening night for THE PHANTOM MENACE 3D. Nothing compares to seeing a STAR WARS film on the big screen, even not a particularly good one. No further word yet on the original trilogy coming to 3D theatres.
20th Century Fox have also announced they are cancelling plans to re-release the 1996 film INDEPENDENCE DAY in 3D. The 3D conversion was due to hit cinemas on 3rd July 2013. Producer Dean Devlin spoke about possible sequels to the $800 million grossing sci-fi movie back in July, but we’ve heard very little since. Could the 3D cancellation be the first signs of trouble?
