There’s a lot of talk surrounding Disney since they snapped up the rights to STAR WARS. If you even mention a director’s name, Disney, and sci-fi in the same sentence, you can bet the rumours will start spilling out. Such a thing happened to both Brad Bird and Colin Trevorrow. We can now confirm that Trevorrow’s science-fiction film for Disney will be a remake of their brilliant FLIGHT OF THE NAVIGATOR. Trevorrow and his SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED writing partner Derek Connolly, are set to write the screenplay with a view to Trevorrow eventually directing.
The FLIGHT OF THE NAVIGATOR saw a young boy return home after having been missing for 8 years, but not having aged a day. AT the same time the US government discovers a crashed spaceship and believe the boy may have some knowledge of it. The remake has been in the works for sometime now, with a script originally penned by Brad Copeland.
Trevorrow and Connolly’s SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED was an excellent little film and they have certainly impressed the execs at Disney as they have also sold the idea for another film to the company. But that one is being kept under wraps for now. Connolly had this to say about the upcoming remake:
FLIGHT OF THE NAVIGATOR wasn’t a seminal movie of my childhood but I remember liking it and the original meant a lot to Colin as a kid, so it’s really his baby. It’ll be good to have some balance so it’s not two fanboys writing the movie.
FLIGHT OF THE NAVIGATOR is one of those charming family films which I think can be taken in a number of different ways, which surely justifies a remake. With the emmerging talents of Trevorrow and Connolly, this could be something with a lot of heart and adventure.
