‘Waterworld’ Remake On The Way Via Syfy!

Now I bloody love Kevin Reynolds and Kevin Costner’s infamous box-office disaster WATERWORLD. Despite the troubles behind the scenes, not forgetting the struggle to recoup its budget, it was certainly one effort that caught my teenage imagination during its initial release in 1995. Well, we now have word either a big screen remake or an new ongoing television series is being planned by Syfy, who are attempting to negotiate rights to the property from Universal Pictures, with a deal said to be close.

The original film told of a post-apocalyptic Earth where the polar caps have all melted, leaving the entire planet covered in water. Costner headlined as ‘Mariner’, a moody drifter with an evolutionary secret, who becomes involved in a rescue of a young girl who may hold the key to the mythic Dryland. The film recently featured in our Guilty Pleasures season, which you can read here, if you missed it.

WATERWORLD was notorious for being the most expensive film ever made for many years but don’t expect Syfy to throw money at the project. The channel (who may make this their first big-screen release) are known for their cheap ‘n’ cheesy television features and shows.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
