Here’s a little businessy article that has just broken over on Deadline that proved to be so interesting, that I decided to give it this post. There’s no huge casting news, or news that a reboot of THE TERMINATOR is anywhere near production, but according to a post on Deadline’s New York website earlier this evening, it seems that the whole legal issues over rights to the franchise has, after 18 months, been finally resolved, paving the way for Annapurna Pictures head honcho Megan Ellison to get cracking.
Ellison’s company have ben responsible for outputting three of Hollywood’s highest profile, and indeed crtically acclaimed releases over the past few months; Paul Thomas Anderson’s THE MASTER, John Hillcoat’s LAWLESS, and the Brad Pitt produced (and indeed starring) KILLING ME SOFTLY, as well as Kathryn Bigalow’s ZERO DARK THIRTY, which is released very soon. She has a great pedigee to bring to such a high-concept franchise, which for me is interesting that she is interested in doing so. If that made any sense.
Ellison paid a whopping $20 million plus for the rights in 2011, and the other big news today is that she has enlisted the help of her brother David and his company, Skydance Productions, to come on board as a creative partner.
Skydance recently made the likes of MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE: GHOST PROTOCOL, G.I. JOE: RETALIATION and the upcoming JACK REACHER, all of which are based at Paramount. Apparently, according to Deadline, there are no plans to base a Terminator movie there.
The Ellisons have only collaborated on one movie together, the Oscar nominated TRUE GRIT remake, but their two very different film backgrounds provide quite a picture of a new action movie starring everyone’s favourite cyborg.
It’s exciting that this may now move forward with a bit more motion, and I for one am intrigued as to what the duo will bring to the table for a new Terminator movie, or movies. Anything is better than ‘Salvation,’ right?
