‘Django Unchained’ And Other Films Cancel Premiere After Connecticut Shooting

Similar to the cancellations of red carpet premieres and press events for THE DARK KNIGHT RISES back in July, DJANGO UNCHAINED and JACK REACHER are suffering the same fate.

After the Colorado shootings in a cinema during a THE DARK KNIGHT RISES screening, Warner Bros. decided to cancel the red carpet premiere in Paris and to postpone revealing the box office figures for the premiere. The cinema shooting was also a direct reason to the delay of the GANGSTER SQUAD release and ensured a re-edited trailer and the re-shoot of certain scenes. Although the recent Connecticut shootings had no relation to any film or cinema screenings, there has been a large discussion relating to film violence and gun control in the US. Today it was announced that JACK REACHER will postpone its release, with Paramount Pictures releasing the following statement:

‘Out of honour and respect for the families of the victims whose lives were senselessly taken. Our hearts go out to all those who lost loved ones’.

Even family-friendly flick PARENTAL GUIDANCE is getting a postponed premiere by 20th Century Fox. The reason is less obvious, but a guess is that after the tragedy a lighthearted film can be considered insensitive.

However, the biggest blow and surprise is the cancellation of a red carpet premiere for DJANGO UNCHAINED. The movie is highly anticipated, with Jamie Foxx and Kerry Washington recently working the press. The premiere, which was set to take place tonight, has been replaced by a screening for cast and crew. A spokesperson for The Weinstein Company says:

‘Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut, and in this time of national mourning we have decided to forgo our scheduled event’.

Tarantino seems to be the most annoyed about this decision; when asked about the violence in films and how it affects people he replied:

‘I just think there’s violence in the world. Tragedies happen. [DJANGO] is a western. Give me a break.’

What do you think? Will Hollywood have to be more careful with the violence they use or do you think it’s not an influence for the recent shootings that have taken place?

Isra has probably seen one too many movies and has serious issues with differentiating between reality and film - which is why her phone number starts with 555. She tries to be intellectual and claims to enjoy German and Swedish film, but in reality anything with a pretty boy in it will suffice.
