Tony Stark’s Festive Message Comes As Downey Jr. Talks ‘Iron Man 3’ Tone

If you’re one of those anticipating more epic comic-book action, we’ve still over four months to wait before we see the beginning of Marvel Studios’ ‘Phase II’. The first out of the blocks will be the return of Tony Stark in IRON MAN 3, which sees Shane Black take over directing the franchise from Jon Favreau (although Favreau is back as sidekick chauffeur Happy Hogan and also serves as executive producer).

Robert Downey Jr. returns to the role of the smart-mouthed, billionaire superhero for the fourth time, which will follow on from the blockbusting events of THE AVENGERS. This time Stark will be up against dastardly villains in the form of Aldrich Killian (Guy Pearce) and The Mandarin (Ben Kingsley), who unleash their evil Extremis virus on to the world.

Downey Jr. has given a few hints at what the fans of the high-flying mechanical genius can expect in his third solo outing.

I think Shane’s gone for a dark feel in this movie. It’s a lot grittier and goes back to its comic-book roots. It’s shaped into a really special movie – and Shane as been instrumental in that.

As for the main villain…

I always think there’s something more terrifying about a villain who’s a genius, as opposed to just relying on strength or ability. We all know what a fantastic actor Ben Kingsley is, and he pulls off the evil genius with real terrifying results.

This new image from the forthcoming sequel also comes with a special message from the beloved comic-book character.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
