A few weeks ago we reported that Sony Pictures had struck a deal with BRONSON and DRIVE director Nicolas Winding-Refn to bring the cult hero, Robert McCall, to the big-screen in a reboot of 1980s hit series THE EQUALIZER. Now it appears Winding-Refn and Sony didn’t see eye-to-eye and the acclaimed filmmaker, known for his love of excess violence in 1970/80s film and television, has vacated the project set to be headlined by Denzel Washington.

The US series, which ran from 1985-89, saw British acting legend Edward Woodward as a retired intelligence agent offering his services as a ruthless and resourceful vigilante on the streets of New York City. Sony are now looking at other potential candidates for fill the void and are sure to make a quick decision to keep the May shooting schedule on track.

Seeing one of my childhood heroes on the big-screen and helmed by Winding-Refn would have been a dream come true. Gutted is an understatement! He is however, still set to produce a remake of William Lustig’s 1988 exploitation classic MANIAC COP.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
