Acclaimed commercial and short filmmaker Dan Trachtenberg will make his big-screen directorial debut with a big-budget blockbuster based on Brian K. Vaughn and Pia Guerra’s graphic novel series, Y: THE LAST MAN. New Line Cinema’s forthcoming film will tell the story of young Yorick and his pet monkey Ampersand, who after a viral plague wipes out the whole population of Earth carrying a Y chromosome, makes him very unique to the surviving female species and the planet in general.

The project previously came close to fruition with director D.J. Caruso and star Shia LaBeouf set to make it their third collaboration, before its development collapsed. Matthew Federman and Stephen Scaia are behind the screenplay that, if successful, will have plenty of inspiration to continue as a franchise with a 60-issue series.

Trachtenberg is perhaps best known for his stunning fan-made short, PORTAL: NO ESCAPE, which was inspired by the best-selling video-game. You can check it out below if you’ve yet to see it.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
