PTA & Joaquin Phoenix To Reunite For ‘Inherent Vice’

One of my favourite filmmakers of the last 15 years is Paul Thomas Anderson. From his underrated debut HARD EIGHT (aka SYDNEY), through acclaimed masterpieces, BOOGIE NIGHTS, MAGNOLIA and THERE WILL BE BLOOD, their aren’t many who have been more consistent. Despite some incredible performances in his latest film THE MASTER, it’s first time I just haven’t ‘clicked’ with his work, which for me, came across as self indulgent and more than a little detatched.

However, Anderson’s next project will once again see him paired with his Oscar-nominated lead, Joaquin Phoenix for crime noir, INHERENT VICE. Phoenix is in talks for the adaptation of Thomas Pynchon’s period LA detective story that has previously seen Robert Downey Jr. linked to the role. If a deal is reached, the WALK THE LINE and GLADIATOR actor will take the character of Larry “Doc” Sportello, a pot-smoking private dick digging amongst the dirt of a murder involving double-crossing billionaires and corrupt cops.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
