Mark Gatiss Discusses ‘Sherlock’ Series 3

Sherlockians can breath a little easier — Mark Gatiss, co-creator and co-star of the wildly popular BBC series SHERLOCK, has revealed some tidbits about the eagerly-anticipated (and much-delayed) third series.

After the death of Sherlock’s nemesis Moriarty (Andrew Scott) in the series two finale, our anti-hero (Benedict Cumberbatch) will be forced to slowly reintegrate himself into society considering everyone close to him, including Watson (Martin Freeman), thinks he’s dead.

But will Sherlock be facing off against yet another of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s colourful villains in the new series? According to a recent interview with Britain’s Radio Times, Gatiss reveals that all-new villains will be created for the show.

Considering this modern update already takes liberties with Doyle’s original texts by setting them in present-day London, the news should come as no surprise. However, those who held out hope for a glimpse of other popular adversaries (Charles Augustus Milverton, anyone?) may wind up disappointed.

As Gatiss revealed:

“All great heroes have their Moriarty and after that you have to be very clever about trying to come up with someone who’s the equivalent otherwise they just look like a watered down version, so it’s about telling different kinds of stories.”

After countless production delays and a hush-hush atmosphere surrounding potential upcoming storylines, SHERLOCK series three is scheduled to start filming in March with a return to television tentatively set for autumn of 2013.
