One of the most bizarre looking but fantastically anticipated films this year has to be AMORES PERROS director, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s latest effort, BIRDMAN. The film stars Michael Keaton as an actor who was once a household name due to playing the popular titular character. Now a struggling actor, he is faced with an identity crises in the run up to his latest Broadway play. Obviously there are parralels between Keaton’s onscreen role and real life, as Keaton is best known for playing Batman in the two Tim Burton films, BATMAN and BATMAN RETURNS. Although Keaton has continued to impress throughout his career, especially with recent turns in THE OTHER GUYS, ROBOCOP and being the best thing about NEED FOR SPEED, he was never as well known as when he played the iconic character.
He isn’t the only superhero alumni taking on a role though, with onetime THE INCREDIBLE HULK Edward Norton and THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN’s love interest Emma Stone, also taking on roles. The film looks like a bizarre trip inside the mind of a troubled soul, while also having a great comedic twist. The fight between Keaton and Norton looks hilarious. It’s certainly going to be one of the most interesting films of the year and may even be an outsider for the big awards.
BIRDMAN is released 17th October in the US but the UK will have to wait until the 2nd January 2015. It stars Michael Keaton, Emma Stone, Zach Gaifianakis, Naomi Watts, Edward Norton and Amy Ryan.
