Marc Webb’s superhero sequel, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2, begin shooting in New York yesterday, with Webb immediately teasing fans with a few mysterious photos (see below). While we’ve heard little about the actual synopsis of the film, the character confirmation of the likes of Jamie Foxx, Shailene Woodley and Dane DeHaan, is all we’ve had to go on, with the trio established as Electro, Mary-Jane and Harry Osborne, respectively.

However, now we have an official press release giving us all the potential plot details of just what our favourite web-slinger will be up against in the follow-up to last summers comic-book hit. The announcement also confirms the inclusion of the awesome Paul Giamatti, who we recently reported was in line for the role of previously unseen villain, Rhino. However, there is no word on the inclusion of Felicity Jones.

Columbia Pictures announced today that filming has begun on The Amazing Spider-Man™ 2 in New York. The film is the first in the history of the franchise that will be filmed entirely in New York City and New York State.

The sequel to last year’s critical and box office hit The Amazing Spider-Man, the film stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, Shailene Woodley, Dane DeHaan, Colm Feore, Paul Giamatti, and Sally Field.

In The Amazing Spider-Man™ 2, for Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield), life is busy – between taking out the bad guys as Spider-Man and spending time with the person he loves, Gwen (Emma Stone), high school graduation can’t come quickly enough. Peter hasn’t forgotten about the promise he made to Gwen’s father to protect her by staying away – but that’s a promise he just can’t keep. Things will change for Peter when a new villain, Electro (Jamie Foxx), emerges, an old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, and Peter uncovers new clues about his past.

The film is directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci & Jeff Pinkner, with a previous draft by James Vanderbilt, and based on the Marvel Comic Book by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are the producers.

The film’s key behind-the-scenes team includes director of photography Dan Mindel, production designer Mark Friedberg, editors Pietro Scalia and Elliot Graham, and costume designer Deborah L. Scott.

The latest chapter in the Spider-Man story is set for release in 3D on May 2, 2014.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.

With MJ and Harry Osborn thrown in the mix, I hope this means we’ll finally get to see 1) the real “MJ the party girl” instead of Kirsten Dunst’s character who was in fact a mash-up of Gwen and MJ; 2) the murder of Gwen at the hands of the Green Goblin : it was THE major key moment in Spider-Man’s life that went missing in Sam Raimi’s trilogy.
