First ‘Nymphomaniac’ Still Emerges, Requires Heavy Squinting

Nymphomaniac

Time to get the binoculars out. The first still for Lars von Trier’s upcoming sexfest NYMPHOMANIAC has been released by UK distributor Artificial Eye, and, well… it doesn’t exactly give much away.

As you can see above (if you put your nose to the monitor), the shot depicts protagonist Joe (Charlotte Gainsbourg) lying in a dirty back-alley as snow falls all around. What you can’t see is, well, anything else; what the film’s going to be about, where in the film this photo might be taken from or indeed, what the bloody hell is actually going on. Though that is often a running theme with von Trier’s films, so it’s probably intentional.

This is von Trier’s first project since 2011’s MELANCHOLIA, which also starred Gainsbourg, though not in any manner as explicit as NYMPHOMANIAC promises. The film will chronicle Joe’s life, as a ‘self-diagnosed’ sex-addict, across two parts. Like most of von Trier’s work, NYMPHOMANIAC is already plagued with controversy, as rumours abound that it will feature scenes of real, unsimulated sex. Think Steve McQueen’s SHAME, turned up to eleven. Probably.

For those less inclined to watch what might end up being basically pornography in their cinema, though, von Trier is also producing a softer, less explicit version. Either way, the film is expected to premiere at Cannes – assuming, of course, von Trier will be allowed to attend at all, after being banned in 2011 ahead of MELANCHOLIA’s release.

NYMPHOMANIAC stars Charlotte Gainsbourg, Shia LaBeouf, Jamie Bell, Stellan Skarsgård, Willem Dafoe and Uma Thurman, and is expected to hit UK cinemas later this year.

I seriously doubt Charlotte will ever consider having real sex on film, especially with someone else than her husband Yvan Attal. Plus, Von Trier has already done that in Idioten and he usually doesn’t do the same thing twice.
