After the critical and somewhat commercial success of TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY which culminated in a eagerly awaited first Oscar nomination for Gary Oldman, there was talk about making a sequel based on another of John Le Carre’s books. Now it seems like we have gotten a confirmation from the CEO of Studio Canal, Olivier Courson. He had the following to say on the subject:
We are working on ‘Smiley’s People‘ with Working Title. It’s still at the development stage – but, yes, the old team of Peter Straughan and Tomas Alfredson is back together. The same ‘Tinker Tailor‘ actors whose characters would reappear are well aware of what we’re doing. We’re hopeful for a 2014 shoot.
This is the second time that SMILEY’S PEOPLE will follow up TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY on the screen as both books were made into TV miniseries in 1979 and 1982 with Alec Guinness in the lead role. If they can get some of the cast to return, namely Oldman himself of course, this film could be another hit.
This won’t be the only John Le Carre novel to hit the big screens in the next few years, as production for OUR KIND OF TRAITOR is set to begin in the summer. Ewan McGregor has signed on to star with Ralph Fiennes and Mads Mikkelsen reportedly close to joining as well. The synopsis for that film is as follows:
While on holiday in Antigua, former Oxford tutor Perry Makepiece and his lawyer girlfriend, Gail Perkins, meet Dmitri “Dima” Vladimirovich Krasnov, an avuncular Russian businessman who challenges Perry to a tennis match. Even though Perry wins, Dima takes a shine to the couple, and soon they’re visiting with his extended family. At Dima’s request, Perry conveys a message to MI6 in England that Dima wishes to defect, and on arriving home, Perry and Gail receive a summons from MI6 to a debriefing. Not only is Dima a Russian oligarch, he’s also one of the world’s biggest money launderers.
The film is written by Hossein Amini (DRIVE) and is directed by Justin Kurzel (SNOWTOWN) and if that cast really comes together this could be another great thriller. We’ll update you on any new developments in regards to both films right here on THN.
