British Acting Veteran Richard Briers Passes Away

rb

British acting icon Richard Briers, best known for his role as the green-fingered Tom Good in 1970s sitcom THE GOOD LIFE, has today died at the age of 79, after a battle with a long illness.

The actor had appears in stage, television and film productions from the 1950s right up to his death earlier today. He is currently seen in the Danny Dyer comedy, RUN FOR YOUR WIFE, and also had a hilariously memorable role in last years underrated comic-horror, COCKNEY’S VS. ZOMBIES.

Briers also provided voices in classic cartoon series ROOBARB & CUSTARD, the cult film adaptation of Richard Adams’ rabbit-weepie, WATERSHIP DOWN and even modern-day kids favourite, BOB THE BUILDER. Another hit sitcom to feature Briers in the lead was EVER DECREASING CIRCLES, while he was a regular in the casts of actor/director Kenneth Branagh’s Shakespeare-inspired efforts, HENRY V, MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING and HAMLET.

He was honoured with an OBE in 1989 for services to the arts. He leaves behind actress wife, Ann Davies, and his two daughters, Lucy and Katie.

R.I.P. Richard Briers, you’ll be sadly missed by those of us here at THN.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
