A sequel to Zack Snyder’s visually-stunning swords and sandals epic, 300, has been rumoured since the release of the film in 2006. The acclaimed graphic novel from artist and author Frank Miller is one of the most successful transitions to the big-screen from the legendary man, and making a superstar of the film’s lead, Gerard Butler.
Formally 300: BATTLE FOR ARTEMESIA, the sidequel takes place around the same time as the events of the previous film but told from the perspective of Greek general Themistocles and his devoted soldiers, as they battle the invading army of Persians under the mortal-turned-god, Xerxes. It’s now sub-titled as RISE OF THE EMPIRE. Again, the film is based on another of Miller’s graphic-novel, the simply-titled, ‘Xerxes’.
Aussie newcomer, Sullivan Stapleton (ANIMAL KINGDOM), takes the lead of the Greek commander with Eva Green as the stunning godess, Artemesia. Rodrigo Santoro reprises his role as the hulking villian and Noam Murro directs. While nothing Earth-shattering, take a look at the early promo banner from the film due in cinemas 2nd August.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
