Fan favourite comic-book scribe David Goyer is set write and direct a contemporary re-imagining of Alexandre Dumas’ classic tale, THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO. Goyer’s the man responsible for the screenplays and story credits on the likes of Christopher Nolan’s THE DARK KNIGHT trilogy, MAN OF STEEL and BLADE. However, his directorial output has been less than stellar with the dismal BLADE: TRINITY, THE INVISIBLE and THE UNBORN, included.

THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO has previously been adapted four times for the big-screen, with the last being the enjoyable 2002 Kevin Reynolds-directed effort starring Jim Caviezel and Guy Pearce. Dumas’ epic novel followed sailor Edmond Dantes who is imprisoned on the island prison of Chateau d’If for 13 years, after being framed and falsely accused of treason by his close friend. He eventually escapes with the help of a fellow prisoner and transforms himself into the wealthy Count of Monte Cristo, to exact his revenge on the man who betrayed him.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
