Here is the opening title sequence to Sam Raimi’s OZ: THE GREAT AND THE POWERFUL.
It’s a terrific example of what some feel is a lost art; a truly engaging credits sequence. A lot of movies tend to show the name of the movie and jump straight in, which is fine, but here, OZ demonstrates that the opening sequence can really bring you into the world the film inhabits. The footage was created by Garson Yu and his Yu + Co. Their site had this to say;
‘Oz The Great and Powerful is a fantastic film that transports us to a place filled with wonder and magic. Our goal with the opening title sequence was to set the tone for the audience to enter the unique, imaginative world that Sam Raimi created. The black and white, stereo 4×3 sequence was designed to flow seamlessly into the film’s first scenes which are set in Kansas in 1905. We drew inspiration from a pre-cinematic form of 3D entertainment, the Theater of Perspective. These miniature paper theaters contained layered images arranged to create scenes with rich 3D depth. Our cinematic fly-through fuses today’s modern 3D cinema with the wonder and showmanship of Oz’s time. The sequence uses 37 different fonts and carefully designed imagery that matches the movie characters and creative credits.’
Just so you know, there is a teeny tiny spoiler at the 20 second mark in the video. If you’ve managed to avoid any news on the plot and want to keep it that way, close your eyes at 20 seconds in, and don’t open them for about 8 seconds there after, you can listen to Danny Elfman’s delightful score in the meantime.
So with out further ado, please enjoy the opening title sequence to Sam Raimi’s OZ: THE GREAT AND THE POWERFUL.
