Christopher Nolan’s MAN OF STEEL production his done a great job so far in keeping the major plot details and any revelations top secret. Despite a perfectly sombre teaser and a jaw-dropping full trailer, we’ve still yet to know much about Superman’s return to the big-screen via director Zack Snyder’s origin reboot. Well, other than knowing Kal-El (Henry Cavill) will be doing his best to stop fellow Kryptonian, General Zod (Michael Shannon), from destroying our planet that he’s now made his home.
While Zod has always been a key mischief maker in both comics, television and film, many fans have been wondering if Clark Kent’s balding nemisis, Lex Luthor could feature somewhere in MAN OF STEEL. While many suggest his presence would be felt in much the same way as Norman Osborne in Marc Webb’s THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN (setting up his appearance in a future sequel), screenwriter David Goyer hinted earlier in the week that:
A little more digging by the folks over at AICN, citing sources close to the production, are claiming there is a third act reveal of Luthor in the upcoming film. They’re also saying it’s closer to Nolan’s THE DARK KNIGHT world as opposed to the comedic spirit of Gene Hackman’s portrayal – “an ambitious, ego driven and cold version of Luthor”.
So who is rumoured to be taking on the role? Canadian veteran televison, film and theatre actor, Mackenzie Gray, is apparently the name being touted. Which is surprising given that he’s previously played a clone of Luthor in WB’s long-running series, SMALLVILLE. Gray is definitely in the film but we’ve no word on the role he’ll take and from the videoed interview below, he’s not willing to spill the beans.
Would Warner Bros. be willing to risk a seasoned professional, yet relative unknown talent in such an iconic role as Luther? We’ve a feeling he could well fit the bill but perhaps he’ll be kept in the shadows to give the studio the option to cast a bigger star in the future. Then again, that Bradley Cooper rumour from a year or so ago could well be right.
Whatever the truth, we’ll find out when MAN OF STEEL is released on the 14th July. Amy Adams, Diane Lane, Kevin Costner, Russell Crowe, Laurence Fishburne and Christopher Meloni co-star.
Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.

This isn’t new news. This is the entire scoop…..
Days back at Screen Rant, a guy whose brother’s working on the Man of Steel sets for WB released several spoilers along with the news that Snyder’s toiling hard to roll out his 3rd trailer next month in a fitting manner. The spoilers speak of not only Lex Luthor, but big baddies like Brainiac, supposedly Metallo and the coveted Kryptonite, all ready to make their presence in Man of Steel.
1) Luthor: Lex Luthor will only be mentioned and is likely to be the primary antagonist for Man of Steel 2 and his corporation LexCorp will be in fully operational in the movie.
2) Metallo: Metallo’s name won’t be mentioned but a USAF Pilot will be subjected to cybernetic experiments (possibly with Kryptonite) under the initiative of LexCorp in Man of Steel. This will pave the way for Metallo’s birth in the sequel, possibly making him Luthor’s key offense against Superman in Man of Steel 2.
3) Brainiac: Brainiac will be mentioned in Man of Steel, somewhere between Krypton’s flashbacks. Brainiac’s character will develop in the subsequent sequels as a background character before he’s likely to be the primary antagonist in Man of Steel 3.
4) Kryptonite: Kryptonite is present in Man of Steel and will mostly arrive on Earth in the form of from the explosion that shattered Krypton and brought Superman’s spacecraft to Earth.
Expect the following villain roster:
Man of Steel: General Zod + Faora + Tor-An
Man of Steel 2: Lex Luthor + Metallo
Man of Steel 3: Brainiac + ???
