The Aussies really want to secure this project! It was revealed today that the Australian government have given The Walt Disney Company a one-off incentive of $21.6million (AUS) to make sure that the David Fincher-developed reboot of 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA will be filmed Down Under. Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Arts Minister Tony Burke have confirmed that they have secured it, and it is expected to bring new jobs and boost the economy.

When THE WOLVERINE was filmed in Sydney last year, the production created just under 2000 jobs, used 1,000 Australian companies and generated $80 million of investment across the country! Debra Richards, who is CEO of AusFilm had this to say:

“The announcement of 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA to film in Australia will result in meaningful benefits for the industry and the economy; including jobs, skills and training, and investment back into the local industry. This one-off payment highlights the importance of an attractive Location Offset which can successfully compete for large scale international production to shoot in Australia.”

20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA will be a reboot of the 1954 cult classic which starred Kirk Douglas. No cast or shooting dates have been confirmed just yet.
