Coogan & Friel Discuss Their Roles In ‘The Look Of Love’

The Look Of Love

Nothing says ‘funny’ more than Steve Coogan – a comedic genius always on the mark. THE LOOK OF LOVE sees Coogan play Paul Raymond, a entrepreneur who goes on to become Britain’s richest man – and Steve has said it was a tough role to take on.

On playing the controversial multi-millionaire, he said:

“At the end of 24 HOUR PARTY PEOPLE I wanted to carry on being Tony Wilson because it was such fun. At the end of this film I wanted to stop being Paul Raymond because it wasn’t a happy place to be. But quite frankly, give me a choice between Mary Whitehouse and Paul Raymond, and I’ll take Paul Raymond any day of the week.”

Coogan co-stars alongside the likes of Stephen Fry, Imogen Poots, Matt Lucas, David Walliams, Simon Bird and Matthew Beard. Anna Friel also takes to the set with Steve, as she plays Raymond’s first wife Jean:

“I think she was a tough cookie, good at her job as a choreographer and she genuinely loved [Paul] before he had money, which shows the love came from a true place. She ended up being hurt at the end of the day. But she was strong and when he did her wrong she was willing to fight for her rights and ended up with the biggest divorce settlement of the time [£250,000, in 1974]. As an actress, I liked being able to play her through the decades, from 22 to 56.”

THE LOOK OF LOVE, directed by Michael Winterbottom, hits UK cinemas on 26th April. You can read the quotes in this week’s ES Magazine, out today and available to read for free on iPad and Kindle Fire.

Considering Jazmine grew up watching CARRY ON SCREAMING, THE LION KING and JURASSIC PARK on repeat for weeks on end, it made sense for her to study film at London South Bank University. It’s also a good thing that her course requires a lot of sitting down because she’s very accident-prone. When she’s not examining her bruises, she likes pretending that she doesn’t live in Southend-On-Sea and spends hours mindlessly blogging. Favourite films include BLUE VALENTINE, ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND and TOY STORY 2.
