Max Landis Speaks ‘Chronicle 2’

Max Landis Image 2Found footage superhero gem CHRONICLE gave a bit of extra life to both of its sub-genres last year. The sequel has been in development since the release of the first installment, but word from the writer’s dad, John Landis, suggested the film was heading for trouble amid writer/producer creative differences. This doesn’t appear to be true, however. Max Landis has come forward and clearly stated that his father is not involved in the production and doesn’t exactly know what is going on:

There was this whole announcement that they wanted to just do the same thing again because my father said that. My father is not involved in CHRONICLE 2. He doesn’t know the process. It was not his place to say that.

The truth is when you have a movie that was as successful as CHRONICLE was, it’s not as quick of a process. There are a lot more voices coming in and saying ‘This is what the sequel should be’ because there’s a bigger expectation and a bigger fear of failure. And that’s really what’s going on with CHRONICLE 2.

Josh (Trank) is directing FANTASTIC FOUR. I’m doing a hundred other movies. CHRONICLE 2 has become this question of ‘How do we all make a movie that we all respect?’. And that’s true to what CHRONICLE is. There’s no one at the studio who wants to make a bad movie. They all want to make a good movie just as much as I do. We’re not fighting. They liked my script. It’s just a really dark script. The question is more of ‘How do we all compromise to get something we want?’ And that’s an incredibly slow process.

Well that certainly clears a few things up, and make sit sound as though there will be some awkward family Sunday roasts in the future. It also sounds as though Trank is expected to return, but not until completing his FANTASTIC FOUR reboot for 20th Century Fox. A darker CHRONICLE sounds good to me, but what I’m really wondering is if they will continue with the found-footage format.

Luke likes many things, films and penguins being among them. He's loved films since the age of 9, when STARGATE and BATMAN FOREVER changed the landscape of modern cinema as we know it. His love of film extends to all aspects of his life, with trips abroad being planned around film locations and only buying products featured in Will Smith movies. His favourite films include SEVEN SAMURAI, PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC, IN BRUGES, LONE STAR, GODZILLA, and a thousand others.

I hope they don’t do the found footage style for the sequel and I really want them to continue the story, not go the route of same situation different characters. Also, I’d love for Andrew to still be alive. His character is a pretty badass villain. I loved that he was kind of the main character and we saw him become evil, rather than becoming this mighty superhero sort of thing. I am definitely excited to see where they go with this project.
