Amy Winehouse’s Life Documentary To Screen At Cannes

S

It’s still sad to remember that the strikingly talented Amy Winehouse died at 27, and we’d only seen a flicker of her musical achievements with surely so many more to come. I recollect picking up her debut ‘Frank’ way before the media got a hold of her life, and although she wasn’t exactly shy of taking on the role of an icon, in retrospect it felt like the pressures of being such a high profile star had a part to play in her demise.

However, there’s still more to see and hear as this year will see the release of the documentary that documents her life with never-seen-before footage and surely personal accounts from friends and family. It’s due to screen at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival in May and bringing the tragic real-life story to the screen is Asif Kapadia, most famous for his unforgettable SENNA documentary. He’ll also be teaming up again with his producer James Gay-Rees for the project. They both had this to say about the film:

“This is an incredibly modern, emotional and relevant film that has the power to capture the zeitgeist and shine a light on the world we live in in a way that very few films can. Amy was a once-in-a-generation talent who captured everyone’s attention; she wrote and sung from the heart, and everyone fell under her spell. But tragically, Amy seemed to fall apart under the relentless media attention, her troubled relationships, her global success and precarious lifestyle. As a society we celebrated her huge success, but then we were quick to judge her failings when it suited us.”

I’m already incredibly interested and believe that they have the the right people working on this, and with an almost endless amount of information, there’s definite opportunity to find a cohesive and balanced story. If we judge their talent by SENNA, then it’s going to be a completely unique insight into the troubled and talented Winehouse. There’s no more general release information currently but we’ll let you know if we hear anything.
