He’s been responsible for some of cinemas most unforgettable scores but despite not having worked together before, John Williams and director J.J. Abrams will indeed collaborate on STAR WARS: EPISODE VII. Abrams has always joined forces with composer Michael Giacchino but when asked during a press conference for STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS in Berlin, if his next space opera project will have Giacchino provide the music, he responded with:

Michael Giacchino is an incredible composer, who I was lucky enough to begin working with on Alias. He’s truly one of the most influential members of our crew, and I think this score, he really outdid himself. Again, for Star Wars, it’s very early days, but I believe that, going forward, John Williams will be doing that film, because he was there long before I was.

Williams has previously been involved with all STAR WARS projects after forming a close relationship with George Lucas. Whether Lucas made his inclusion as one of the stipulations when signing the rights over to Disney remains to be seen but Abrams obviously seems aware Williams would be onboard.

Are fans happy with the news? As ever, we’d love to know.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.

Are we happy with the news? Seriously, do you really have to ask? Of course we are! Even though his scores for the prequel trilogy weren’t as memorable as the original ones, his music and the way it conveys the story are essential to Star Wars and we wouldn’t want it any other way. There’s no other film composer whose talent comes even remotely close to his.
