Female Lead Found For Ritchie’s The Man From ‘U.N.C.L.E.’

After growing up glued to repeats of cheesy 1960s spy series THE MAN FROM FROM U.N.C.L.E. (usually on BBC2 at teatimes), I’ve been eagerly awaiting a big-screen reboot for some time now. When Steven Soderbergh failed to get his George Clooney-starring actioner off the ground, I wondered if we’d ever get to see it.

Thankfully, Warner Bros. saw fit to task Guy Ritchie in ushering the hoped new franchise that is now confirmed to star Tom Cruise and Armie Hammer as United Network Command for Law Enforcement agents Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin, previously played with great vigour by Robert Vaughn and David McCallum.

We can now confirm the first female lead has been found in Alicia Vikander, last seen in Joe Wright’s ANNA KARENINA. She’ll play a brand new British agent specifically created for the film, which maybe a little strange considering the rising actress is Swedish. Could she be a double agent?

Like Cruise’s MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE franchise, THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. will receive a technological upgrade as the team fight the forces of Technological Hierarchy for the Removal of Undesirables and the Subjugation of Humanity (T.H.R.U.S.H.). Nasty!

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
