Warner Bros. are playing musical chairs with some of their upcoming 2014 releases, but all for good reason. ALL YOU NEED IS KILL and 300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE will be debuting later than previously stated, although the former will have earlier international release dates. Dan Fellman, President of Domestic Distribution, and Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, President of International Distribution for Warner Bros. made the announcement yesterday.
ALL YOU NEED IS KILL has been moved to a prime Summer release in the US and will now hit screens on 6th June 2014. It will premiere on 30th May 2014 in many countries, so as not to collide with the World Cup. Apparently sporting events really do have a big effect on box office take. This is a huge leap from the film’s original 7th March 2014 release date, and shows a lot of confidence in Cruise, even though his recent Spring opening, OBLIVION, was his biggest opening yet.
Fellman stated that:
We have tremendous confidence in ALL YOU NEED IS KILL and view it as a perfect tent pole for the Summer frame, with its combination of great cast, compelling story and tremendous action.
While Kwan Vandenberg added:
We are thrilled about ALL YOU NEED IS KILL heating up our Summer ’14 slate. It is an action-packed adventure, told by an extraordinary cast, which is sure to have global appeal.
300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE will see its release date delayed by 7 months and will now hit screens 7th March 2014. This may seem like an act of non-confidence in the film, but Warner Bros. assure us that it is to emulate the Spring release of the original 300 in 2007.
Fellman was quick to point out the similarity:
Moving 300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE to March 7 continues in the tradition of the first 300, and kicks off the Spring movie-going season in epic style. The film is on track to become all that audiences have come to expect from the franchise.
With Kwan Vandenberg commenting:
We are also excited about the continuation of the 300 saga. “The first 300 movie was a huge success internationally, and the day-and-date release of the new film is a great opportunity to turn its opening into a worldwide event.
I’m not too bothered about the 300 sequel, mostly because I didn’t exactly enjoy the first installment. ALL YOU NEED IS KILL, on the other hand, looks fantastic. Cruise is keeping himself busy with mostly interesting projects at the moment, as well as director Doug Liman proving himself in a number of genres over his career.
