‘Swan Lake’ Grabs James Cameron For Live 3D Show

James Cameron

It has been announced today that James Cameron will direct a live worldwide broadcast of the worldwide hit Swan Lake next month.  The broadcast, from The Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg, will be screened to 50 countries across the globe. Mariinsky’s artistic director Valery Gergiev will conduct alongside Ekaterina Kondaurova in the starring role.  Cameron plans to make use of the 3D technology he has pioneered with films such as AVATAR and also used in Ang Lee’s LIFE OF PI to make the production an event viewers won’t forget in a hurry.

The director and producer behind such box office juggernauts as TITANIC and ALIENS has been quiet of late; his last  box office outing was 2009’s AVATAR which currently holds the record for the highest grossing film of all time.  AVATAR 2 is scheduled for 2015 with AVATAR 3 also in the works.

Screening productions live has increased in popularity as producers find ways to reach new, larger audiences.  Last year The National Theatre screened their sought-after production of  ‘Frankenstein‘ in which  Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller alternated the roles of Victor Frankenstein and the Creature.  Expect more live screenings in the coming months as more productions make use of the technology.
