Cruise Exits Richie’s ‘U.N.C.L.E.’!

Sadly not a hilarious (and homoerotic) as that title sounds but breaking news coming out of Tinseltown has superstar Tom Cruise no longer attached at the lead in the Warner Bros’ reboot of the cult 60s series THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E., set to be directed by Brit Guy Ritchie.

Armie Hammer recently put pen to paper on a deal that will see him partner up with Cruise in what the studio hoped would be a brand new action franchise in much the same vein as Cruise’s own high-tech espionage adventures with MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE. Apparently, Cruise has walked away in an effort to get started on the fifth outing of Ethan Hunt and his IMF team, expected to be directed by Christopher McQuarrie from a screenplay by IRON MAN 3’s Drew Pearce. Rising stunner Alicia Vikander was also recently added to the cast.

It’s almost becoming a cursed project following Steven Soderbergh’s previous attempts at getting the movie of the ground. Working alongside frequent writing collaborator Scott Z. Burns and George Clooney before the project fell through.

Could Ritchie turn to his SHERLOCK HOLMES lead Robert Downey Jr., who’s recently confirmed he’s wanting to focus on an all-new franchise? Also there is that Drew Pearce/IRON MAN 3 link. We’ll keep you posted!

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
