J.J. Abrams’ STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS is currently at the top of most international box-office charts but has surprisingly not been as successful as the studio thought. It was expected to open to a huge $100 million three-day haul in the US and while it has now crossed that threshold, it took the sci-fi sequel a lot longer than expected. By no means does that mean Abrams’ film is a failure but perhaps the lukewarm reviews and the fact that as a spectacle it really didn’t blow fans away, has had an effect. There is also the small matter that Abrams could have had his mind elsewhere while putting the picture together.

Whatever the reason, the director will not return for a third outing of the rebooted series having been confirmed as the director of Disney and LucasFilm’s STAR WARS: EPISODE VII, due in cinemas summer 2015. While it’s expected his Bad Robot Productions will continue to produce alongside Paramount Pictures, a new director is being sought to take over the captaincy of guiding the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise in new adventures.

A list is being drawn up and is being led by British funnyman-turned-filmmaker, Joe Cornish. His acclaimed work on the big-screen includes screenwriting Spielberg’s under-appreciated animated THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN: THE SECRET OF THE UNICORN and Marvel’s upcoming ANTMAN, both of which he collaborated with pal Edgar Wright. He also made his directional debut with the well-recieved sci–fi/horror homage, ATTACK THE BLOCK.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
