It was an obvious and calculated move on the part of 20th Century Fox by announcing late into the game that the character of Quicksilver will be included (or rather shoehorned) into Bryan Singer’s currently-shooting X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST. A shock to Marvel Studios and Joss Whedon after they’d confirmed both the character and his sister, The Scarlett Witch (known as Pietro & Wanda Maximoff, the twins of Erik ‘Magneto’ Lensherr) would be included in THE AVENGERS 2.
The news has sparked fury from behind-the-scenes, bringing bad blood to the relationship between the two studios. Many believing this is payback for Marvel’s refusal to allow the S.H.I.E.L.D. moniker/characters to be used in past Fox projects and also the loss of their DAREDEVIL rights, which have now reverted back to Marvel.
However, when asked on Jimmy Fallon’s talk show last night, Whedon remains undaunted and confirmed that he still plans to use the two conflicted characters to freshen up the superhero sequel ensemble.
There are new characters. I already said that we’re going to have a brother/sister team, the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, who were great mainstays of The Avengers when I was reading the comics as a kid. Besides the fact that I grew up reading them, their powers are very visually interesting. One of the problems I had on the first one was everybody basically had punchy powers. [Quicksilver]’s got super speed. [Scarlet] can cast spells and a little telekinesis, get inside your head. There’s good stuff that they can do that will help sort of keep it fresh.
This could get messy…
