Could it be Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Chastain, Reese Witherspoon or Amanda Seyfried? Those are the names that are rumoured to be in contention to play the former First Lady and Secretary of State. RODHAM, being directed by James Ponsoldt, is still in the early stages of development but with casting reports already doing the rounds interest in this movie is high; and don’t expect it to die down anytime soon. The script, from first time screenwriter Young Il Kim featured on 2012’s ‘Black List’ which has previously listed ARGO, THE KING’S SPEECH and SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE as some of the best unproduced screenplays in Hollywood.
Director Ponsoldt’s credientials were checked out in 2012’s SMASHED and this year’s THE SPECTACULAR NOW and here’s the synopsis of what to expect in his political biopic:
During the height of the Watergate scandal [in the 1970s], rising star Hillary Rodham is the youngest lawyer chosen for the House Judiciary Committee to Impeach Nixon, but she soon finds herself forced to choose between a destined path to the White House and her unresolved feelings for Bill Clinton, her former boyfriend who now teaches law in Arkansas.
All four actresses being touted for the role have experience in a biographical role; Johansson in HITCHCOCK, Witherspoon in WALK THE LINE, Chastain in ZERO DARK THIRTY and Seyfried as porn star Linda Lovelace in LOVELACE which is due in cinemas this August. As the closest in age to Clinton at that time in her life Seyfried has the numbers advantage. However; to play Clinton, one of the most recognizable faces of American politics over the last 20 years, perhaps the film makers would do well to look to a lesser known actress as their star.
Of course the question on everyone’s lips is surely: who’s going to play Bill?!
