We’ve just seen the first trailer for SHORT TERM 12, the small indie movie that went down a storm at SXSW 2013, and judging by the content it looks like we won’t be disappointed by this movie’s hype! Directed by Destin Cretton (I AM NOT A HIPSTER) and starring Brie Larson and John Gallagher Jr., the film won both the Grand Jury prize and the Audience Award at the annual Austin film festival.
SHORT TERM 12 tells the story of Grace (played by Larson), a young care worker at a fostering facility trying to help the damaged kids she sees come through the doors, but who is not without some dark secrets of her own. Trying to help her overcome her past is co-worker and long suffering boyfriend Mason (Gallagher Jr.)
Both leads have been forging their careers in TV, with Larson receiving praise for her role as Toni Collette’s daughter in Showtime’s United States of Tara, as well as playing one of Michel Cera’s exes in SCOTT PILGRIM VS THE WORLD and a role in THE SPECTACULAR NOW. We fell in love with John Gallagher Jr. as hapless good guy Jim Harper in HBO’s THE NEWSROOM and he looks to be playing another lovable do-gooder here.
Supporting cast includes Kaitlyn Dever (THE SPECTACULAR NOW) and Rami Malek (THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN – PART 2). No release date has been announced for the UK but with the success of the movie at SXSW we’re hopeful it will be picked up for a 2013 release. Check out the trailer below.
