The ONLY GOD FORGIVES team have gone a little quiet after a massive build-up for the Cannes screening, this might be because it didn’t go down as well as they’d hope with some citing that it was a lot of visual over actual content. However, some films do that at Cannes and so the rest of us will just have to reserve judgement until the full theatrical release.
The film stars the enigmatic Ryan Gosling as Julian, a drug-smuggler thriving in Bangkok’s criminal underworld. Life then starts to get a little bit twisted when his mother (Kristin Scott Thomas playing Crystal) convinces him to kill whoever is responsible for his brother’s recent death. There’s surely undoubted inklings of Oedipus here, with a faint essence of DRIVE but from what we’ve gathered, with less story and more violence.
Still, I think we’ll be keeping an eye out for it, no pun intended on this previous poster. Scott Thomas looks stunning in the trailer and here she is, featured in full neon-effect:
ONLY GOD FORGIVES is released in US cinemas 19th July and the UK from 2nd August.
