If you thought you would have to wait a long time for the sequel to Hugh Howey’s WOOL, well you don’t have to! After a few months of its first release, we now have SHIFT. While SHIFT is being billed as a sequel to Howey’s first book series , it actually opens with a prequel to the first book. We know, it sounds a little bit confusing. But if like us, you finished WOOL wondering about The Silos, well we get a deeper look into them and their beginnings.
SHIFT is split into three parts, which helps because the world of SHIFT is much more bigger this time and we’re dealing with different timelines. We begin with the first Shift ‘Legacy’ and follow Donald, a young start up who has been asked to be a part of a project, but he has no clue just what he is building. It’s tense and thrilling action with each page as Donald discovers the true meaning of The Silos.
Part Two is named ‘Order’ and while we are met with a new character, it does not take us too far away from the action. We follow more of the mystery behind The Silos and with great contrast to part one. But it is the third Shift ‘Pact’ that lets the sections down just a little bit. We see Jimmy, a young man growing up in the Silos after the uprising. While his story is emotionally appealing, it just feels very drawn out to a point where you stop caring about it and it doesn’t really give the book the great ending it deserves, which is quite a shame.
But while the last part of SHIFT lets the team down, it is only a small smidgen of a problem with this great book. Hugh Howey has been constantly great through out the series and it takes a special kind of author to make you feel completely comfortable in a new world, despite how confusing it might seem on the surface. Howey keeps the readers guessing, and it takes us on a ride full of emotional back story and tense drama.
