For a huge portion of the human race, the only thing worse than the pun I used in title of this article is the fact that Tom Hiddleston will not be returning for THE AVENGERS 2. Joss Whedon confirmed the news during an Empire Movie Podcast to discuss his latest offering, the retelling of Shakespeare’s (Google him) MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING. Speaking of the superhero blockbuster sequel’s progress, Whedon commented:
I’ve turned in a first draft, but the story is very set. Everybody’s very much on board with the exact movie I’m trying to make which is what worked the first time.
But when pressed for a bit more information Whedon said:
Immitating what I did before is the surest way to do it not as well. Second of all, and Loki is not there to say those terrible things.
So there you have it. Not all that surprising really, considering that Loki has already been the main antagonist in two of Marvel’s films, THOR and THE AVENGERS, and he’ll also be returning for THOR: THE DARK WORLD in November this year. Whedon is right that THE AVENGERS 2 simply can’t tread familiar ground, especially when Loki’s anger and identity issues could get old fast. Luckily, it seems as though Loki will be teaming up with his brother Thor in some capacity for THOR: THE DARK WORLD. No matter what, whoever takes over villain duties in THE AVENGERS 2 has some pretty big shoes to fill.
THOR: THE DARK WORLD stars Chris Hemsworth, Christopher Eccleston, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Jaimie Alexander, Stellan Skarsgård, Idris Elba, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Kat Dennings, Ray Stevenson, Zachary Levi, Rene Russo, and Anthony Hopkins. It hits cinemas 8th November.
