U.S. Weekend Box-Office Report: Monsters University Retains The Top Spot

monsters_university_2013-wide

It has been quite the weekend at the US box-office, with Pixar’s MONSTERS UNIVERSITY hanging onto the top spot with a massive $46.1 million in its second week out there. That’s huge. What’s even bigger news is the pasting that it gave the new openers in North America this weekend. Paul Feig’s comedy THE HEAT fared quite well taking in $40 million, enough to land the number two spot, but it was the very lackluster performance of the $150 million budgeted WHITE HOUSE DOWN which failed to set the box-office tills alight, taking a mere $25.7m, handing it only the number four position in its first week, a spot behind WORLD WAR Z, which took another $29.8 million in its second week in the chart.

MAN OF STEEL dropped to number five in the chart, but the big news is that today the film crossed the $500 million worldwide gross mark, making it a very big deal and a huge success for Warner Brothers. The film still managed to take $20.8 million this weekend.

Here’s the US top ten in full. We’ll have a full UK box-office report to see how this weekend’s big releases THIS IS THE END and DESPICABLE ME fared, on Tuesday.
