Just in time for the 75th anniversary of John Steinbeck’s classic novel THE GRAPES OF WRATH, legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg (who’ll produce) and Dreamworks Pictures are set to move forward with another adaptation of the book and are actively in negotiations with the late Steinbeck’s estate. THE GRAPES OF WRATH was previously brought to the screen in 1940 by John Ford, who walked away with the Best Director Oscar for his work, which starred Henry Ford, Jane Darwell and John Carradine.
Steinbeck’s novel centres on Tom Joad, who returns to his Midwest family home following a jail sentence to find his loved ones kicked out of their farm due to foreclosure. He locates them working on his Uncles farm and convinces them to head for California to start a new life. However, during the Great Depression, it becomes harder than he ever could have imagined.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
