This week is a big one if you’re a US inhabitant, what with the 4th July extended weekend, but what if you reside in the UK; what can you expect to go and see at your local multiplex? Here, we take a look at what’s new this week at the movies.
Released Wednesday 3rd July 2013
THE INTERNSHIP (12A)
What’s It About?
Two salesmen whose careers have been torpedoed by the digital age find their way into a coveted internship at Google, where they must compete with a group of young, tech-savvy geniuses for a shot at employment.
What Do We Think?
“People will comment on this being a sequel to WEDDING CRASHERS (‘Google Crashers’), but it’s less hectic than that outing with its heart in just the right place. This story of connections and possibility will absolutely make you laugh and leave you in high spirits. In an age of paranoia regarding technology, it’s actually rather refreshing.”
An FBI agent and an Interpol detective track a team of illusionists who pull off bank heists during their performances and reward their audiences with the money.
What Do We Think?
“ Leterrier’s cast and direction keep you transfixed as the thrills escalate, all the while planting the seeds to later developments. It’s only in the final third that things become a little stale despite featuring the most action-packed moments in the movie. Still, there’s great fun to be had with a well-choreographed flying fistfight and a car chase that drives us into a surprising turn of events and a supernatural-esque conclusion that won’t work for everyone..”
A group of bored, fame-obsessed teenagers decide to ditch their homework duties and burglarise celebrity houses.
What Do We Think?
“Coppola’s crisp cinematography, accompanied by a killer soundtrack and tongue-in-cheek performances, make for a sleek, sexy finished product. While more in-your-face than her other films (you can’t help but feel a little assaulted by the music and flashing club lights), THE BLING RING perfectly encapsulates 21st century life, dominated by the temptations of a fast buck.”
On their 50th anniversary tour in Fiji, Rick Parfitt and Francis Rossi witness a murder organised by an evil gangster played by Jon Lovitz, and spend the rest of the movie running for their lives.
What Do We Think?
“In a season full of overly serious blockbusters concerning the end of the world, brooding superheroes and shiny spaceships, here is a film that doesn’t take itself seriously by any stretch of the imagination. The acting is wooden and unimaginative, as is the story, but it will keep any audience laughing. SCHINDLER’S LIST it is not, but this film is worth a view and a few laughs. If you like a bit of ‘Whatever You Want’ in the first place, all the better.”
A documentary following the fates of three young Russian women who, after a satirical performance in a Moscow Cathedral, are put on trial for their actions, initiating controversy, outrage and protests across the world.
What Do We Think?
“The film doesn’t refrain from the gory details and facts of the case, and reveals the cruel reality we live in. As much as we may like to believe we have evolved beyond injustice, it exists, and exists in more places than we would often care to admit..”
