New Images But More Problems For Supernatural Thriller ‘Odd Thomas’

Despite an upcoming appearance at this years Film4 Frightfest, the future still looks bleak for Stephen Sommers’ big-screen adaptation of the first of horror author Dean Koontz’ ODD THOMAS series of novels.

With shooting on the film completed a few years ago now, financial problems and studio lawsuits have seen the supernatural suspense thriller gathering dust. Yet another lawsuit was filed by TOOT and Fusion Films on Monday in Los Angeles Superior Court, against a number of companies and individuals who promised over $35 million in marketing and distribution costs and have yet to come up with the goods. This means the chances of seeing the film on general release in the next year (or even two) is slim to none!

ODD THOMAS is led by STAR TREK and FRIGHT NIGHT’s Anton Yelchin, whose short-order cook finds his psychic abilities come in handy when a mysterious man is linked to a series of unsolved murders. The film was hoped to be the beginning of a new franchise with the impressive supporting cast also including Willem Dafoe, Patton Oswalt, Nica Tortorelli and Addison Timlin (arguably the best thing about this years gangster comedy STAND UP GUYS).

Even the recent sales trailer looked a spooky thrill ride and pretty fun, which is surprising given Sommer’s lacklustre list of credits. Is it wrong for me to admit I still believe his best film is DEEP RISING!

Anyways, ODD THOMAS, which is not coming to a cinema near you anytime soon (unless you’re visiting London in August), has released a bunch of new stills with more smooching than scares.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
