I’m in no way a believer in the supernatural but that certainly doesn’t stop me enjoying a great ghost story. Stand outs for myself in the genre include THE CHANGELING (1980), POLTERGEIST (1982) and STIR OF ECHOES (1999). Speaking of which, James Wan’s forthcoming spookfest, THE CONJURING, is another receiving strong word of mouth following a number of festival screenings and having the ‘based on a true story’ tag can only help.
Surviving parnormal investigator Lorraine Warren is the focus in this featurette. She, along with husband Ed, supposedly made their living exorcising demons and spirits from this world and Wan’s film is based one of their creepy cases in 1970s, in which the inhabitants of a secluded farmhouse in Rhode Island find their lives terrorised by an otherworldly presence.
THE CONJURING stars Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, Ron Livingston, Lili Taylor, Joey King, Shanley Caswell, Haley McFarland, Mackenzie Foy, Kyla Deaver, Sterling Jerins and is released in US cinemas 19th July and the UK from 2nd August.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
