Three-time Tony-Award winning musical The Secret Garden is coming to the UK later this year for an intimate tour of 5 venues around the country. Premiering on Broadway in 1991 and running for 709 performances, the musical tells the story of orphan Mary who returns from her birthplace in India to live in rural Yorkshire with her bitter Uncle after her parents die of cholera. She makes friends with a local boy and together they discover the mysteries held by the house and it’s enchanting gardens. The Broadway production, with lyrics by Marsha Norman and music by Lucy Simon, won Tony Awards for ‘Best Book of a Musical’ ‘Best Featured Actress’ and ‘Best Scenic Design’.
The musical is based on the best selling children’s novel of the same name that was published in 1911 by Frances Hodgson Burnett and has also had several movie adaptations; a mostly black and white affair in 1949 starring Margaret O’Brien that had the scenes in the garden shot in colour among them.
This new production played at The King’s Head Theatre in Islington earlier this year and following it’s success the production team are taking it on tour. It is directed by Matthew Gould with musical direction by David Keefe. No casting has yet been announced for the dates.
The tour starts on October 11th and will stop off in Guildford, Croydon, St Albans, Tunbridge Wells and Buxton.
