The summer always gives us a plethora of impressive, inventive film events across the capital and last night we were lucky enough to attend British Airways pop-up cinema experience Silent Picturehouse, that’s in association with the mighty BAFTA. This superb affair is running from July 22nd to 26th right next to London Bridge and takes the silent cinema idea and not only adds a touch of class but also re-invigorates the standard ‘sit there with your headphones on‘ proceedings but how you ask? Well, let me explain.
In the beautiful stone arches of London’s Vinopolis, we were treated to a 5-star event with 5 screenings to choose from, all running at the same time! Of course, they’re travel-themed so we managed to squeeze in a bit of SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE (The Fan’s Choice voted for on their Facebook page), plus SKYFALL, TOP GUN, JAWS and THE BEACH.
That’s not all though because how would a film be complete without popcorn and all the extras? Included in the ticket price were some very tasty Nacho hotdogs, ice-cream, sweets and – very impressively – some unique gourmet popcorn that tied in with each individual film screening. This ranged through the following: Shark Bite popcorn that had a seafood twist, Take My (Spicy) Breath Away popcorn, Shaken not Stirred Martini popcorn, Suncream (tropical flavours) popcorn and Millionaire’s Curry Caramel popcorn. Oh, so good!
Before we share a few pictures, Silent Picturehouse is truly a brilliant concept by British Airways that brings travel, film and in-flight entertainment together. Their service over the evening couldn’t have been more perfect and, just so you know, limited tickets have been held back for the final week and are now available at: ba.com/silentpicturehouse
When asked about their favourite travel-related films, the stars all had their personal favourites. Mr James
Corden mentioned his favourite, which is one I have to agree with:
“It would be PLANES, TRAINS AND AUTOMOBILES. It’s maybe the funniest film ever, but it reminds you that the journey is just as important as the destination.”
The lovely Edith Bowman opened the evening and looked stunning, she chose the unforgettable INTO THE WILD. Also attending was rising star Craig Roberts who chose Y TU MAMA TAMBIEN, MTV Europe’s Laura Whitmore went for UP and Olympic medallist Louis Smith went for THE HOBBIT which, we’ll give him, is one heck of a journey.
Despite catching a moment of each film when they begun, we then spent the evening with Maverick, Goose, Ice and Kelly McGillis in TOP GUN. It was great to re-visit the classic on the big screen, in complete comfort and we hope to see this gathering of film and fun again soon! Thanks to British Airways, Tattinger Champagne and Hotel Chocolat (plus all the wonderful workers) for a stunning evening! Here are those pictures we promised:
