Sometimes there’s a film you follow through pre-production, production and finally on to post-production and marketing, and it just screams ‘train wreck’ all the way through. THE CANYONS is such a film. Starring Lindsay Lohan (MEAN GIRLS, FREAKY FRIDAY) and James Deen (…several films that we officially haven’t watched at THN) the film is written by Bret Easton Ellis (who is most famous for writing the novel-turned-cult classic film AMERICAN PSYCHO) and directed by Paul Schrader (writer of TAXI DRIVER & RAGING BULL). The official synopsis is as follows:
Christian is a young LA trust-fund dude who’s financing a horror film simply to keep his dad off his back about doing something with his life. He has been dating Tara for about a year — she was an aspiring actress/model who settled down with him when the reality of the business became apparent to her. She’s now just Christian’s bored plaything. Christian’s assistant Gina is casting the film with assistance from Tara. Gina is pushing Ryan, her boyfriend and struggling actor, for the lead. Unbeknownst to either Christian or Gina, Ryan and Tara were a couple three years ago. When Ryan came back into Tara’s life during the auditions for the movie, they reignited their affair. But Christian, a dangerous control-freak, finds out about the affair and starts playing cruel mind games with both Tara and Ryan, which escalate into an act of bloody violence.
That incredibly confusing and cheesy synopsis aside, the production has been plagued with rumours of issues with Bret Easton Ellis seemingly dissatisfied with the final product, Lindsay Lohan having been acting…well…like Lindsay Lohan, and the film having been rejected by the Sundance and South-By-Southwest festivals due to ‘quality issues’. Everything points to it being incredibly poor, but of course it’s a bit premature saying that without the final product having been released. This new poster is actually not that bad. It’s at least better than most photoshopped posters are, but it’s nothing too spectacular either.
THE CANYONS is directed by Paul Schrader. It stars Lindsay Lohan, James Deen, Nolan Gerard Funk, Amanda Brooks, and Gus Van Sant (!!). It is scheduled for a limited cinema release on 2nd August 2013 in the US as well as on VOD. There is currently no release date for the UK.
