Leonardo DiCaprio has now declined the lead villain role opposite Oscar-winner Colin Firth in Matthew Vaughn’s big-screen adaptation of Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons’ comic book, THE SECRET SERVICE. It’s a comic-book which the KICK-ASS director also had a hand in the creation. This leaves Vaughn to look elsewhere for that particular role but we now have a confirmed young lead of Gary, the nephew of Firth’s British Secret Service spy, ‘Uncle Jack’, who begins to mentor his young wayward relative as his protege as a top government operative. Newcomer Taron Egerton has beaten off competition from Jack O’Connell, John Boyega and Christian Cooke to land the role Aaron Taylor-Johnson was unable to commit to because of clashing shooting schedules.

More details have also emerged with Michael Caine also officially onboard, while Emma Watson and Bella Heathcote are also being eyed for roles. Shooting on THE SECRET SERVICE is set to begin next month and we’ll bring you more details as they come. Vaughn’s frequent screenwriter Jane Goldman has again penned the screenplay.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
