Warner Bros. are currently working on a new big-screen adaptation of Victor Hugo’s iconic 1831 novel, ‘The Hunchback Of Notre Dame‘ from a script by SHERLOCK HOLMES: A GAME OF SHADOWS’ Kieran and Michele Mulroney. It’s a project, titled QUASIMODO, that’s been stuck in development hell for quite some time but could now be moving forward with famed Chinese director Zhang Yimou. Josh Brolin has been attached since day one and is expected to take the lead of the deformed bell-ringer, who becomes the saviour of his beloved Esmerelda when the young gypsy girl is framed for murder.

The filmmaker behind the likes of international martial-arts hits HERO and HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS, most recently impressed with acclaimed wartime drama THE FLOWERS OF WAR starring Christian Bale. Hugo’s novel has been adapted many times, perhaps most famously by William Dieterle in 1939, starring Charles Laughton as the hunchbacked hero. Even Disney got in on the act with their 1996 animated hit and 2002 sequel.

We’ll keep you posted as the project comes to fruition.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
