ITV crime drama Broadchurch, broadcast earlier this year in the UK, is being taken to new shores as it was announced today that it will be remade for American audiences. The drama series follows the mystery surrounding the tragic death of an 11-year-old boy in the seaside town of Broadchurch. Olivia Coleman and David Tennant starred as the detectives taking on the case which brought new intrigue and discovery with every episode and kept audiences on tenterhooks until the last episode. We won’t spoil it by telling you whodunnit but with such sublimely crafted episodes and revelations we’re not surprised at the news of this remake.
It’s being remade by US network Fox and the chairman Kevin Reilly had this to say about the series:
“Broadchurch is the kind of storytelling that grabs your attention and keeps you riveted with every minute – which is exactly what we look for in an event series. We love the layered characters, we’ve seen how well-received it’s been in the UK and we’re lucky to be able to bring a new version of this mystery to the US audience.”
The show’s creator Chris Chibnall is on board as a producer and will also write the first episode. The story is expected to remain the same with relocation to an American beach and casting details yet to be announced.
A second series of the UK show was ordered after the final episode brought in 10 million viewers. That is expected in April 2014 but little information is known as to whether it will follow the same story line or introduce a new set of characters as it was originally intended as a stand alone miniseries.
